Book of Unholy Mischief Book Tour: Guest Post by Author Elle Newmark

The issue of my age came up shortly after I sent my agent an over-excited email with a faintly adolescent text message acronym she asked, “How old are you?’ OMG, OMG, should I lie? No. I shot back, “I’m sixty. Why? Is that a problem?” Not that I was defensive.

It’s shocking, unbelievable really, that I’m over sixty. I don’t think about my age, and I feel like I’m thirty-five, only smarter. Because, you see, I didn’t spend forty years writing in a void. I was also living.

I’ve had jobs, big and little, marriages, good and bad, lovers and friends and children and grandchildren. I have survived divorce, single parenthood, life-threatening illness, and teenagers. I’ve had moments of ineffable joy as well as patches of despair as black as scorch, and I wrote pretty consistently through all of it, if only in a journal. But I remained unpublished.

One day, I looked in the mirror and accepted that my books would never be published. It was crushing, and the only way I could get out of bed was by rolling directly into my reading chair, a comfy old thing in a corner of my bedroom, and plunging into a fictional world. It’s appalling, but I wallowed in the tragedy of my own crucified ego.

About that time, I hit my 60th birthday. That was fun. I thought about Shakespeare who had finished his immortal work in his forties, Van Gogh dead at thirty-seven, Caravaggio who revolutionized painting in his twenties, Bernini sculpting masterworks at sixteen, Mozart composing at five. Even Jesus had wrapped it up and headed back to heaven in his early thirties. I sulked on the sofa in rumpled pajamas and ate cold pizza.

Then I got angry and decided to take things into my own hands. I turned away from traditional publishing and took the humble route of self-publishing. My friends and family were apprehensive. I could see the pity in their eyes. Isn’t it sad to see Elle grasping for the brass ring that has so clearly passed her by? But I forged ahead, bold as an old crow.

Long story short (you can read the long story on my website, www.ellenewmark.com) I got a two-book deal with Simon & Schuster. The Book of Unholy Mischief was published last December and my work is being translated into more than a dozen languages.

But here’s the thing: Now that I’m published I see more clearly than ever that the greatest satisfaction is in the writing itself. All writers hope to be published, but we begin writing because something inside of us yearns to make something beautiful or to shed light on what it is to be alive. Like any other passion, we did not start doing it for fame and fortune, but for those transcendental moments when we are swept up in the act of creation. We pursue those flashes of clarity when we are able to express the divinity within. I call it “being in the zone,” and it is what gives my life meaning.

Real success is finding something you love and then doing the hell out of it. Being good at something makes us feel complete and valuable.

Our passions are our consolation for mortality, age is irrelevant, and none of us knows what waits around the next corner. When my work is passed over or my age seems like cause to quit, I think of Winston Churchill: With the sky over England littered by falling bombs and London besieged and people dying and the future looking hopeless, sixty-eight year old Churchill pushed out his pugnacious chin and growled, “Never, never, never, never give up.”

Book Description:

It is 1498, the dawn of the Renaissance, and Venice teems with rumors of an ancient book that holds the secret to unimaginable power. It is an alchemist's dream, with recipes for gold, immortality, and undying love. Everyone, rich and poor alike, speculates about the long-buried secrets scrawled in its pages and where it could possibly be hidden within the labyrinthine city. But while those who seek the book will stop at nothing to get it, those who know will die to protect it. As a storm of intrigue and desire circles the republic that grew from the sea, Luciano, a penniless orphan with a quick wit and an even faster hand, is plucked up by an illustrious chef and hired, for reasons he cannot yet begin to understand, as an apprentice in the palace kitchen. There, in the lavish home of the most powerful man in Venice, he is initiated into the chef's rich and aromatic world, with all its seductive ingredients and secrets. Luciano's loyalty to his street friends and the passion he holds for a convent girl named Francesca remain, but it is not long before he, too, is caught up in the madness. After he witnesses a shocking murder in the Palace dining room, he realizes that nothing is as it seems and that no one, not even those he's come to rely on most, can be trusted. Armed with a precocious mind and an insatiable curiosity, Luciano embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the truth. What he discovers will swing open the shutters of his mind, inflame his deepest desires, and leave an indelible mark on his soul.

Rich with the luxurious colors and textures of Venice, The Book of Unholy Mischief delights the senses and breathes fresh life into an age defined by intellectual revival and artistic vibrancy. A luminous and seductive novel, it is, at its heart, a high-spirited tribute to the fruits of knowledge and the extraordinary power of those who hold its key. In a world of violence and intrigue, who guards the truth?

Gardeners by Upper Canada Review

I love the lazy days of summer with the nice, hot weather and having bonfires in the backyard. I love roasting marshmallows- yum!! Another summer activity I enjoy is gardening. Nothing beats fresh veggies from the garden. However, one drawback to both these activities is the pesky bugs! They are pretty bad at my place out in the boonies. I am always full of mosquito and black fly bites when I spend any amount of time outdoors!

Today I want to tell you about three new outdoor protection products from the popular specialty hand and body care line- Gardeners by Upper Canada. I got to try out the Skin Cooling Mist with Insect Repellent Essential Oils. They also have the Protective Day Lotion with Natural Mineral Defense and the After Sun Lotion with Skin Soothing Ingredients as part of this new summer line.

The Skin Cooling Mist with Insect Repellent Essential Oils is a cooling formula that delivers a needed burst of freshness to the skin during a warm Spring or Summer day outside. It contains a unique blend of rosemary, lavender, neem and citrus oils which all have natural insect repellent properties.

I thought this product was fantastic. It smells great- really fresh and clean. It does work to cool you down when you are outside on a hot day. Very refreshing! Plus it also doubles as a bug repellent and it actually does work. I didn't notice the bugs as much after spraying on this product.

What I love the most about this product is that it is a more natural alternative to the chemical laden bug sprays out on the market. I refuse to wear them since I am chemically sensitive and find my skin gets really irritated when I do put on the traditional repellents. I would almost rather the bug bites than spray on those chemicals. I was very excited to try out the Skin Cooling Mist with Insect Repellent Essential Oils because it did not have anything in it that might react with my skin and was happy that it seemed to do the trick for me. Mind you I didn't go camping in the thick of the bush, but for regular outdoor yard work, it did work for me.

You can find the Gardeners by Upper Canada at gift shops, home and garden stores and select department stores across North America. Upper Canada Soap is celebrating 40 years in bath and body and is committed to building its reputation for creating high quality personal care products for the specialty gift industry.

Bug & Pickle Review & Giveaway

Sisters, Kim (aka Bug) and Nicole (aka Pickle) wanted to combine a sense of fun along with practicality in their products for new moms and babies to make gift giving a delightful experience. Their new business, Bug & Pickle, is backed by their wealth of expertise in the world of personal care as both sisters own a spa in Vancouver, British Columbia. They are both ecstatic to finally have their dream come true of seeing their mom and baby products finally on the market and being happily enjoyed by moms and babies everywhere.

Bug & Pickle offers two types of product lines: Baby Maintenance and Mummy Maintenance. For baby items, they have vintage inspired blankets, baby butter, baby lotion, beeswax baby soap, head-to-toe baby wash, scalp oil, teething oil, tummy trouble and diaper gel. As for us moms, they have belly rub, belly firm, belly cream, nipple cream, hooter hiders (for nursing moms), and various gift packs.

You can purchase Bug & Pickle products from their online store, other online retailers or select retailers in the US and Canada. Visit their site to find a retailer near you.

I had the chance to review four products from the Bug & Pickle baby line: Baby Lotion, Baby Butter, Tummy Trouble and Teething Oil.

Bug & Pickle's Baby Lotion smells awesome! I love that it's scented naturally with the lavender, chamomile and orange essential oils. They have also infused it with extracts of green tea, aloe vera, shea butter and vitamin E. It contains 96% natural ingredients and no synthetic fragrances or colour and is gentle on sensitive skin. I loved this both as a lotion for my little niece and for myself. It's non greasy formula works for me.

Bug & Pickle's Baby Butter is great on dry or irritated patches of your baby's skin. It smells just as wonderful as the baby lotion since it includes the same essential oils. It contains vegetable oils and beeswax which work wonders on their healing and soothing abilities. I used on my nieces bottom and it worked well and was very gentle. Another use for us moms is as a cuticle cream! Love these multi-use products! This one is priced at $16 Canadian (great for you US folks out there to save on the exchange!).

I also had Bug & Pickle's Teething Oil to try out. This one uses the essential oil of Roman chamomile as an analgesic. I love that it is natural and babies love the sweet taste including my niece, Avery. It seemed to work well with her. It costs $14 Canadian.

And last but not least, I was also sent Bug & Pickle's Tummy Trouble. This one uses the essential oils of dill and fennel to ease your newborn's stomach upset caused by constipation or colic. It's used differently than the traditional remedy of gripe water which your baby ingests. Tummy Trouble is actually massaged onto your baby's abdomen in a clockwise motion. I don't have a newborn to try it on, but I liked the fact that your baby doesn't have to have it in his/her mouth for it to work. I was always leery about some of the ingredients in gripe water so this is another alternative for parents to try. It costs $14 Canadian.

Overall, I am impressed by Bug & Pickle's products. I love that they use essential oils which are both natural, effective and smell great! The prices are reasonable and the selection is also top notch. I would definitely recommend Bug & Pickle to moms everywhere!

Wednesday Edition of Sex and The Suburbs

Sex and the Suburbs

Every Wednesday, I will be posting a teaser to this week's latest column of Sex and The Suburbs from Wise Young Mommy. So what is Sex and The Suburbs? According to Wise Young Mommy herself...
Sex and The Suburbs is a weekly column focused on fleshing out all the issues suburban moms face within their relationships and sex lives after they have children. The column is the basis and a jumping point of the book I am writing on the same topic, which will discuss everything from sex after childbirth, body image issues and finding the time and energy for sex to spicing things up in the bedroom, the sexless marriage and having sex with kids in the house. I am taking surveys from moms of all walks of life, marital status, sexual orientation, ages, etc. to compile as much research as possible so the book will be an all-encompassing, comprehensive look at motherhood and sex. It is informative, funny and hopefully will help moms open up their fears, worries and concerns or share their success stories with other moms to inspire them.
